Bathroom updates worth doing first
Bathrooms reward targeted changes. Before gutting anything, find out which single change would improve the daily experience most.
What this decision really turns on
Plumbing moves
Keeping fixtures where they are keeps the project affordable. Moving them multiplies cost.
Ventilation and moisture
Any finish decision in a poorly ventilated bathroom is a short-term decision.
Daily friction
Storage, lighting at the mirror and water pressure usually matter more day to day than tile.
Questions worth answering first
- What annoys you most about the room each morning?
- Is there an extractor fan, and does it work?
- Are you keeping the current fixture layout?
- Who uses it — one adult, or a family in a rush?
HOW HOUSE asks these one at a time, then reasons from your answers — and your photos, if you share them.
Mistakes that cost homeowners money
- Retiling over an unresolved damp or ventilation problem.
- Moving plumbing for a small visual gain.
- Choosing polished floor tile that becomes slippery when wet.
